Au claire de la lune
Wonderful moon brooch with diamonds in gold and silver, around 1900
Brooches in the shape of a crescent moon first came into fashion at the end of the 19th century. Ladies of the time often wore them in conjunction with various other brooches at the neckline of their sumptuous dresses or on the collar of their high-necked blouses. Many moons were decorated exclusively with diamonds, but more colorful designs were also implemented, sometimes with several rows of precious colored stones, diamonds or pearls. The brooch presented here is also a fine example from the family of so-called "crescent brooches", as the brooches popular in the English-speaking world were called. Set in patinated silver, nineteen old-cut diamonds are set in a sparkling row. This gives the piece of jewellery a magnificent appearance. The brooch was created in the years before the turn of the last century and found its way to us from Hamburg. It refers to the oriental fashion of that time, carries off, so to speak, into stories of the thousand and one nights, gives its wearer a touch of exoticism and marks her out as being as educated as she is sensual. A wonderful piece with about 1.80 carats of fine white old-cut diamonds in very good qualities!
Jewellery with symbols such as the star and the crescent moon are evidence of the Orient fashion of the mid-19th century. Unlike in the centuries before - in the 18th century the Turks were still outside Vienna - the Ottoman Empire was no longer seen as a threat, but as a desirable, foreign and exotic counterpart. Especially after Prussia's closing of ranks with the Ottomans in the Crimean War of the 1850s, people loved the Orient with all its foreign characteristics, which was then extensively travelled and explored.
