Wonderful necklace with amethysts & pearls in gold, Edwadian circa 1905

The years around 1900 were an exciting era in the field of arts and crafts. The new forms of Art Nouveau enriched the designs of the goldsmiths' workshops with fresh, decorative shapes. A number of centres quickly emerged in Europe during these years, each of which took a different approach to this new style. While in France the School of Nancy pointed the way and floral motifs were transformed into spectacular new art forms, Vienna inspired with a stricter conception of ornamentation and total works of art were created that were to influence almost every area of human life. Goldsmiths in the British Isles also eagerly embraced these currents and those years saw the emergence of light and airy designs with a character all their own. After Queen Victoria's death in 1901, fashion also took a different direction with the accession of Edward VII. The Edwardian era is characterised by jewellery designs that were lighter and more modern than the creations of the Victorians - and one piece from these years is available here: A wonderfully large, lightly swaying pendant in an enchanting hue is forged of delicate gold. Three faceted amethysts of deep purple color are set in gold, accompanied by small natural pearls. Beautiful light reflections are thus created with every movement of the piece. The shape of the pendant is openwork and has nothing heavy about it - which is precisely why it lends itself to becoming a summertime companion!
