Magnificent earrings in platinum, diamonds & jade, circa 1930/2020

China, the land of smiles, with its millennia-old culture has always fascinated Europe. It is impossible to imagine European art of the last centuries without chinoiseries, Chinese arts and crafts, especially porcelain, were a status symbol at all European courts and a sign of discriminating taste. In the Art Deco years, East Asia also played a decisive role in the field of jewellery. Almost all the great Art Deco jewellers were influenced by Asian works. Cartier developed a line with Chinese motifs that even became stylistically influential for the designs of the house. Parallel to this, operas set in China were created, such as Puccini's "Turandot" or Lehar's operetta "The Land of Smiles". The pair of magnificent earrings presented here responds to this enthusiasm for China in a wonderful way: Each presents an oval element made of Chinese jade. Finely carved floral ornaments adorn the panels, which shine in wonderful shades of green. In ancient China, jade was known as "sky stone", as it was said to have numerous properties, ranging from healing effects to protective functions. Pieces of jewellery cut from jade are still traditional gifts today, which are supposed to bring luck to the recipient. Above the carvings rises a finely designed structure that illustrates the above-described understanding of form of that time. The graphic elements are decorated with fine mille handles, creating a play of light and shadow with the incident light. Nineteen octagon-cut diamonds each cover the platinum with their starry brilliance. At the beginning of the century, platinum was the most expensive precious metal of all and jewels made of platinum were correspondingly exclusive. The diamond-set platinum elements come from an Art Deco watch bracelet, the bracelet of one of those watches with a tiny dial that are hardly worn today. Our goldsmith has added the jade plates and the gold earwires to the platinum elements of the years around 1930, thus creating these earrings entirely in the spirit of Art Deco. The movable connection of all elements creates a new play of reflections with every movement. An absolute recommendation for all lovers of exciting earrings!
