Star in the dark night

Delicate earrings with diamond roses & lapis lazuli drops, c. 1890 and later

Mined since classical antiquity, especially in Afghanistan, lapis lazuli is prized for its intense blue color. Ground lapis of the best quality was used to produce "ultramarine", one of the most precious pigments of the Middle Ages and early modern times, used by artists such as Giotto and Michelangelo. The deep blue of lapis lazuli pigments was so precious that it was paid more than gold. We also see two drop-cut lapis lazuli in this pair of earrings, created from antique pieces in our workshop. The lapis drops are attached to two round elements of gold and silver, holding two small rose-cut diamonds in star settings. Gold ear hoops and brisures added by our goldsmith to the late 19th century diamond pieces make the earrings wearable. A small elegant pair in beautiful colours.
