Art nouveau ring with diamonds & sapphire, circa 1905

In the early years of the 20th century, new types of rings emerged that conveyed romantic messages through the number of their stones. A ring with three gemstones, of which the middle one is usually set apart by type or size, is called a trilogy ring, because it is supposed to symbolically refer to a couple's shared past, present and future. Such a trilogy ring is this one from around 1905, which features a sapphire in the center and two sparkling diamonds on either side. In addition to the classical design, two dynamic arches in the taste of Art Nouveau are added to the sides of the ring. Thus, the ring gains dynamics and at the same time a beautiful size on the finger. But not only the arrangement of the stones with their focus on the center, i.e. the present has a meaning. There is also a symbolism in the choice of gemstones, which is intended to underline the romantic statement of the form: For the diamond is understood in the language of gemstones as a sign of eternity, while the blue sapphire stands for truth and fidelity. Reddish gold completes the colour triad.
