A gift of love
Delicate trilogy ring with old cut diamonds in gold, Great Britain circa 1900
In the years around 1900, jewellery fashion became lighter and more lively; under the influence of Art Nouveau, the shapes of jewels also changed. This type of ring, for example, is very typical of that time and is characterized by the curved ends of the ring rail that embrace each other on the outside. In Great Britain, where this ring was made, such a piece of jewellery is also called a "crossover ring". Three diamonds almost seem to float between the curved ends, so discreet are their settings. A crown of delicate claws holds each of them on a small gallery that allows plenty of light to reach the stones, making them appear even more brilliant. All three diamonds are shaped in the old cut, the predecessor of our modern brilliant cut. In total, they weigh about 0.52 ct and show off beautiful, expressive light refraction. Rings of this type, set with three diamonds, are also called trilogy rings. The number of three is then interpreted as the temporal levels of a relationship: the shared past, present and future. The present ring was also once a gift of love, as evidenced by an ancient engraving inside the rail. Here we learn that "RM" once gave the ring to "SM" as a gift. The names of that couple lie in the darkness of history today - but the ring has survived the passage of time and is now ready to seal a love anew.
