White, white, white...

Delicate bracelet with 1,85 ct diamonds in white gold & platinum, around 1920

Jewelry in cool white, which best emphasized the brilliance and fire of the diamonds - that was the dream of jewelry designers since the late 19th century. But the technical possibilities put a stop to this dream for some time. Silver was starting to run out, platinum was many times more expensive than gold and rare after the war, but early white gold - patented in 1913 - often still had a somewhat gold-colored tone and was softer, so that fine details could not be realized as well as in platinum. In a way, this bracelet is an intimate glimpse into jewelry history, as it shows us how early 20th century goldsmiths approached this problem. The side links are thus made of high-carat white gold - but the centre piece, the jewel's showpiece, is forged from solid platinum. The difference in colour is only revealed to the trained eye under a magnifying glass, and so the goldsmith who made it literally combined the best of both worlds. The platinum of the centrepiece almost disappears in the light of a total of 45 diamonds of approximately 1.85 ct, which shine in historic cuts. Held only by narrow bars, three old-cut diamonds seem almost to float in the center. With its curved, soft formal language, the jewel is still in the tradition of the Belle Époque, shortly before the gentle curves everywhere gave way to the graphic edges of Art Deco. A beautiful white jewel of the early 20th century, probably created in the Netherlands.
