Delicate Lavallière Necklace With Diamonds In Gold & Platinum, Circa 1910

In the early 20th century, a new form of necklace conquered Europe in just a short time. Especially younger ladies, who kept up with the more avant-garde changes in fashion, liked to adorn themselves with it: We are talking about the so-called lavallière, also called negligee necklace. Two pendulums of different lengths are attached to a decorative element and form the showpiece of the necklace. The specimen presented here is a beautiful example of this fashion. An elongated element is the starting point of the design. It sets three diamonds in a setting that connects two circles and a square. Two pendulums, slightly different in length, are attached to this prelude. They end again in two circular shapes, each setting a large diamond. The decorative element of the necklace with the diamonds is made of yellow gold and has a platinum face. This was the usual technique at the beginning of the 20th century to obtain white luminous jewels, when platinum was still too difficult to process to make jewelry entirely from this metal. The chain of the necklace, meanwhile, is made entirely of white gold. We added it to the necklace in our workshop because the original chain was worn through. We discovered the necklace in Cologne.
