Glittering butterfly

Enchanting butterfly brooch with diamonds in silver & gold, around 1895

Jewellery in animal form is always a reason for joy. In the years around 1900, it was insects in particular that exhilarated the ladies' world: dragonflies, flies, butterflies: hardly an order from the class of Insecta that didn't make it to the lapels. Especially in Great Britain people loved this fashion, but also on the continent great pieces were created. The brooch here, dating from around 1895, has chosen a butterfly to delight with its delicate form. The little butterfly is richly set with glittering diamond roses. The juggler of the skies is made of bright silver, which is covered with gold on the back so as not to blacken clothes. Soon one's fingers itch to touch the seductive piece as well. The flickering in the eye makes you too curious not to be awakened by very basic instincts. But the butterfly and all the other insects themselves are known to sit down on the most seductive spots without flinching, in order to savour their pleasure to the full. And so the brooch, which itself arouses desire, takes on an ironic twist - we want to touch and feel it, and are immediately held up a mirror. On dating and fashion, see, among others, David Bennet and Daniela Mascetti: Understanding Jewellery, Woodbridge 2010, at page 234.
