Precious beetle

Victorian style contemporary pendant brooch set with sapphire & diamonds

Jewellery in the form of precious insects was a great fashion of the late 19th century. Butterflies and bees set with precious stones adorned the corsages of elegant evening dresses. But not only these cute representatives of the insect world were used as models for jewellery designers: Needles in the shape of flies were found on men's ties, diamond-studded spiders were allowed to adorn ladies' festive updos. Even moths and beetles, made of precious metal and set with jewels, became sought-after fashion accessories. The present brooch depicts a stag beetle. It is part of this ancient tradition, but it was created more recently - probably in India, where traditional gemstone cuts and techniques are still mastered today. The diamonds are shaped in the historic rose cut, and the pastel blue sapphires also feature individual cuts that were created by hand. They occupy the entire top of the beetle, which thus shimmers with every movement. The body is made of silver, which is gold-plated in the area outside the wings. This technique, also called vermeil, was already known in ancient times. All details are finely worked out - especially ingenious is the fact that the legs, pincers and wings are movable. The beetle can be worn in two different ways, depending on your mood, thanks to a brooch on the back and a pendant loop above it. This hidden double function is also a reference to the Victorian era, which inspired the design, as many pieces were designed in this way at the time.
