Contemporary art deco style ring with sapphire & diamond setting
Art Deco - the modern, glamorous style of the 1920s and 1930s still fascinates us today. We associate this style with the golden era of Hollywood, with actresses like Mae West or Marlene Dietrich, with classics like F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Once avant-garde and sometimes even rebellious, Art Deco jewellery is now considered the epitome of timeless elegance. It's no wonder, then, that jewelry designers continue to draw inspiration from this style to this day. This ring is also based on rings from around 1920 in terms of style and material combination, with an intense dark blue sapphire set in its center, shaped in an oval faceted cut. Staggered arches surround the center stone. They are set with diamonds and made in platinum in the old style, while the ring band itself is made of gold. The ring is very well preserved and complements antique as well as modern jewelry. Thanks to its pleasantly flat design without lobes, it is also suitable for daily wear and cannot get stuck anywhere. Thus, it is also perfectly suitable as an engagement ring.
Among all gemstones, the deep blue sapphire in particular has been attributed various mythical qualities over the centuries. In the Middle Ages, bishops wore this stone as a ring because they believed it warded off wiles and falsehood, and protected its wearer from feeling envy. Then in his Natural History of Gemstones, Della storia naturale della gemme, Naples 1730, Giacinto Gimma wrote that the color blue represented Venus as well as the study of celestial bodies and stars, and was most purely represented in sapphire. In the gem language of the 19th century, the blue sapphire was associated with truth and loving fidelity. For instance, the painter Sir Edward Burne Jones, who also designed jewellery, wrote to his close friend Frances Graham: "Sapphire is truth, and I am never without it [...] Sapphires I make my totem of!"
