Less is More

Timeless Trilogy Ring With Old European Cut Diamonds in Gold & Platinum, Circa 1910

"On our childhood weighed the paralyzing overabundance of things, not even one of which could make us cheerful..." Full of weariness, Henry van de Velde retrospectively summed up his discomfort with the art of the late 19th century, which was oriented towards the rich ornamentation of the past. Together with other artists of his generation, he therefore searched for new forms, for simple, reduced beauty - and thus decisively shaped a variety of Art Nouveau that was more linear in character. Dynamic lines, never distinctly figurative but at most remotely floral in appearance, were particularly popular in Germany, where van de Velde worked and lived for a long time. The present ring meets this demand and relies entirely on the effect of its noble materials, presented in perfect workmanship. Three old European cut diamonds totaling about 0.73 ct have been strung side by side between gently curving bands and set in fine milgrain settings. The top of the ring gleams in cool platinum, allowing the ring to glow in white monochrome. Not only its simple design, but also the stamping inside the ring band suggests that the piece of jewellery was created in Germany. For all its clarity, however, the ring may still be hiding a secret, for the triple number of centre stones in trilogy rings like this one is sometimes interpreted romantically: they are supposed to stand for a shared past, present and future.
