A new beginning

Antique diamond & sapphire ring in platinum, circa 1930

This ring made of platinum, diamonds and a dark blue sapphire revives the splendor and life of the Weimar Republic. During these years, all of Europe was looking for a new beginning, free of the baggage of history. Geometric, clear forms, light colours, preferably white also determined the jewellery: it should glow in the night like the new electricity, which was introduced everywhere. It was to be luxurious, like the life that had just been freed from the hardships of the crisis. And simple, without worries. The ring corresponds to this ideal of beauty and transports it into today. The platinum ring is designed as an oval that is placed lengthwise on the finger. Surfaces of platinum fill the oval like sails or the parts of an umbrella. Set into the oval are two old-cut diamonds of a quarter carat each. They accompany the dark blue sapphire in the centre of the ring. The smaller diamonds that occupy the face and the ring shoulders were cut as early as the 19th century, as evidenced by their slightly irregular shapes. They appear to have been taken from older jewelry and reused in the years around 1930. This is often seen in the 1920s and 1930s: Tastes had changed so radically that numerous pieces of pre-World War II jewelry appeared to be no longer wearable. This was not only a fashion decision, but partly also had a moral dimension: it was a visible attempt to break with the times of the parents and that generation which had plunged the continent into the maelstrom of war. However, the ring also underwent a small change in later times: the central sapphire with its white gold setting was probably added to the ring in more recent times. The back view shows that originally a pearl was set here, which probably got lost in the course of time. With its new setting, the ring is once again eminently wearable.

Germany experienced a stormy economic upswing in the mid-1920s. The great crises such as the lost world war, the loss of the overseas colonies and the inflation of the post-war period were now over. Massive investments from the USA stabilized the Weimar Republic for a short time and gave the country a boom that contributed significantly to the characterization of the decade as the "Golden Twenties". The displays of the shops shone again in new luxury, and not least jewellery and jewels served to show this wild joie de vivre visibly to the outside world. The style of the jewellery of these years developed away from the historicising forms that characterised the 19th century and often went its own, new ways that took up the currents of contemporary art. Sometimes, however, historical forms were reinterpreted according to the taste of the time. This led to a short but intense epoch, which could hardly have been more imaginative and imaginative before: first-class craftsmanship, exciting new forms and the exuberant sparkle of high-quality gemstones made these pieces stand out.
