Antique necklace with amethyst, citrine & pearls in gold, London circa 1905
The British Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd. had its headquarters in the elegant shopping mile of Regent Street in London's West End. The company was known for always offering the finest goods in the taste of the time and even supplied the English court. From their richly illustrated catalogues, the upper middle classes, too, chose fine jewellery. In 1952, the company merged with the court jeweller Garrard, who had, among other things, produced a crown for Queen Victoria and from whose range Princess Diana was later to choose her engagement ring. The present necklace was made between 1901 and 1910: we know this because it has survived in its fitted case, the inside lid of which bears the Royal Warrant, referring to the King. After Queen Victoria's death, Edward VII succeeded to the throne in 1901. Stylistically, the necklace is also entirely in keeping with the taste of the "Edwardian Era". Its light, buoyant forms and choice of materials are as typical of the period as can be. The basic design focuses on the large pendant that swings beneath a small flower. It is composed of tendril ornaments entirely set with fine seed beads. A round amethyst is set in the heart of the pendant, held by a millegrain setting. Below, a drop-cut golden yellow citrine is suspended. The design glows richly and warmly with additional fine gilding (bloom finish) on the massive high karat gold. The necklace is solid and crafted to a high standard. In its original case, it has survived as if not a day had passed since it left the gates of 112 Regent Street.
