Elegant cocktail ring with large opal & diamonds in white gold, circa 1970
One of the most effective ways to vividly showcase a large colored stone and a true classic in vintage jewelry is the Entourage ring. Set in a wreath of white diamonds, the effect of the centrally set coloured stone is heightened. Particularly in the second half of the 20th century, white gold was popular for this purpose, as it takes a back seat in terms of colour and allows the gemstones to come to the fore. Such a ring is presented here. In the centre, it holds a high-quality Australian full opal in an elongated oval cabochon cut, which is interspersed with lively colour reflections. Neon green, peach and even pink reflections dance in front of the bright, bluish ground, interspersed with splashes of electric blue. If you hold the Opal against the light, you can see that it is a so-called Crystal Opal: It is characterized by its slightly translucent body, in which the color patterns seem to float like cosmic mists. Against the light, it shimmers peach-colored; worn, however, or backed with an opaque background, the green-blue color intensifies. A ring of fine diamonds surrounds the opal. The diamonds weigh a total of 1.26 ct and are of white to fine white colour throughout and of particularly beautiful clarity (vvsi-vsi). A subtle but effective trick is the alternating arrangement of the brilliant-cut diamonds, so that a larger stone follows a slightly smaller one. This gives the design a dynamic tension without compromising the harmonic design. The ring was made around 1970 and is in excellent condition. Typical of the period is not only the combination of materials, but also the gallery undercasing of white gold struts as well as the shape of the ring rail. An independent gemmological appraisal confirms the fine quality of the gemstones.
