Trip To Paradise

Antique Bird Brooch With Large Opal, Diamonds & Colored Stones, Circa 1940

A bird of paradise with sparkling feathers flies by in front of us. Its feathers are richly set with a roundelay of wonderful gemstones whose beauty comes to life in the light of the sun: It is a firework of colors, accompanied by warm gold and radiant silver, in the middle of which a precious gemstone is the highlight of the design: a large opal. The opal, a stone from Australia, is cut as a cabochon and shimmers in blue and green. The bird's head and neck, wings and tail both frame and protect it. They are forged from gold and silver and set with diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds. The brooch was created in the years around 1940, probably in Great Britain. Jewellery in the form of animals was - again - a big fashion at that time, the wonderful panthers and birds by Cartier, for example, made jewelry history. Typical for this time is on the one hand the stylized form of the design as well as the colorfulness of the piece, which is actually reduced to red, white, blue and green, with a few accents in gold, despite the richness of gemstones. The opal here is quite wonderfully chosen and complements the light of the sapphires and emeralds beautifully. The fact that the gemstones, at least in part, are probably in secondary use here, i.e. have shone in other jewelry before, further supports the dating to these years: the war sometimes made it difficult to obtain new gemstones - but a dreamlike bird like this one could help to forget the bitter days. The brooch found its way to us here in Berlin. It is very well preserved.
