Into the modern age
Elegant pendant brooch of the Art Deco with emerald & diamonds, around 1930 & later
Culturally, the emerald has been associated with hope, youth and new beginnings since ancient times: For its vibrant green color reminded even the ancient Romans of spring and the sprouting of plants. There could hardly be a more fitting gemstone to capture the spirit of optimism of the Art Deco period, that fast-moving and innovative time between the wars. The jewellery designs of those years were so modern that they still seem timeless to us today. A large emerald weighing 5.75 ct is the protagonist of this piece of jewellery, which characteristically evokes the formal language of those years: Set in solid platinum, the emerald glows with almost unreal intensity - all the more so when the transparent stone rests on the skin or a fabric with only a slight jardin. The surface of the abstractly shaped pendant framing the emerald is set with a total of 4.90 ct diamonds: Large historic old-cut diamonds and of a fine white color. A series of geometric cuts such as baguette, carré and trapezoid interrupt the field set by old cuts vertically, creating a refined contrast of refractions. The jewel can be worn as a pendant and also as a brooch: if the latter is desired, the pendant eylet can simply be folded in. However, these functions were only given to it later, as the jewel was once a so-called dress clip, a typical form of jewellery of the Art Deco period, which was clipped to the neckline, the lapel or the belt. It was only in more recent times that the former clip was reworked for the purpose of wearability. The piece of jewellery is in excellent condition. We were able to discover it in Vienna and have commissioned an independent appraisal to assess the quality of the materials used. It is delivered with the piece of jewellery. A true investment piece!
