Beauty of the 60s

Fabulous cluster earrings with sapphires & diamonds in white gold, circa 1965

This pair of white gold stud earrings exudes the optimistic spirit of the 1960s. It features a breathtaking set of gemstones in the typical design language of the decade. At the midpoint of the decade, particularly expressive arrangements with jaggedly expressive lines were popular in the field of jewellery, which also characterise the present design. Diamonds were as popular as ever, but they were mostly combined with coloured stones such as rubies or, in this case, deep blue sapphires. The plugs each present an elegant cluster of gemstones. The stones seem almost randomly scattered, yet they are carefully arranged and coordinated. A total of fourteen blue sapphires and eighteen white diamonds with a total weight of 1.06 ct enhance each other in the most advantageous way through their contrasting play of colours. The sapphires are designed in an elongated navette cut and thus provide the radiant appearance that many pieces of jewellery of this period display. The gemstones are held in place by the typical lobes of the time, the ends of which are rounded like spheres and add further highlights to the ear jewellery. The interplay of high-quality gemstones and cool white gold creates a pair of stud earrings that exemplifies the formal language of the swinging sixities. The studs came to us from Stuttgart as part of a set and come with a detailed appraisal from the German Gemstone Appraisal Society of Idar-Oberstein. Also take a look at the matching bracelet and necklace. Similar jewellery can also be found in David Bennet and Daniela Mascetti: Understanding Jewellery, Woodbridge 2010 on page 414.
