Beauty of the 60s

Fabulous cluster necklace with sapphires & diamonds in white gold, circa 1965

This exquisite necklace in white gold with a stunning gemstone setting exudes the optimistic spirit of the 1960s in the typical design language of the decade. At the midpoint of the decade, particularly expressive arrangements with jaggedly expressive lines were popular in the field of jewelry design, which also characterize this design. Diamonds were as popular as ever, but they were increasingly combined with coloured stones such as rubies or, in this case, deep blue sapphires. The necklace presents an elegant gemstone cluster in its center. The stones seem almost randomly scattered, yet they are carefully arranged and coordinated. Twenty blue sapphires weighing a total of approximately 7.58 carats and thirty-four white diamonds weighing a total of 2.61 carats enhance each other in the most advantageous way through their contrasting play of colors. The sapphires here are designed in an elongated navette cut, providing the radiant look that many jewelry pieces of this period display. The gemstones are held in place by the typical lobes of the time, the ends of which are rounded like spheres and add further sparkling highlights to the necklace. The interplay of high-quality gemstones and cool white gold creates a piece of jewellery that exemplifies the formal language of the swinging sixities. The necklace came to us as part of a set from Stuttgart and comes with a detailed appraisal from the German Society for Gemstone Appraisal Idar-Oberstein. Also take a look at the matching stud earrings and bracelet. Similar jewellery can also be found in David Bennet and Daniela Mascetti: Understanding Jewellery, Woodbridge 2010 on page 414.
