Starlight with real pearl
Splendid Toi-et-Moi ring with natural pearl & diamonds, around 1900
This ring from around 1900 fascinates with the harmonious interplay of its precious materials: a genuine natural pearl from the Persian Gulf, a large old-cut brilliant-cut diamond and other glittering old-cut diamonds are combined and set in precious paltin and rose gold: A play of light of white warm reflections is created that captures the attention and yet appears delicate and elegant at the same time. The juxtaposition of the two large elements, the pearl and the brilliant-cut diamond in this ring identifies it as a so-called "Toi-et-Moi" piece of jewellery. The genre of these "you-and-me" jewelry pieces are gifts of a romantic nature and typical gifts of love. Designs with two opposing elements were very popular from the early 20th century onwards: people loved to play with symbols. In the imagination of the time, man and woman stand opposite each other as lovers; recognisable as independent elements, yet firmly united by their feelings and symbolically united in one piece of jewellery. The materials used, the cuts of the stones and the shape of the ring allow us to date it to the years before the turn of the last century. It is in first-class condition and a wonderful, precious piece.
The value of natural pearls compared to cultured pearls is obvious - as with natural gemstones, they are small natural wonders. The price of natural pearls in the years around 1900 was about the same as for diamonds of the same size and pearls for a necklace were usually purchased individually for cost reasons and collected until a strand was together. The magic that emanates from natural pearls can hardly be put into words, as each natural pearl is different from the next and has its own luster, structure and shine. They are always wonderful unique specimens of nature - which are hard to find today.
