Unusual Platinum Ring With Emerald & Diamonds, Around 1970
Which jewellery lover has not had the experience that a fine piece of jewellery can brighten up a dreary day? At least that's how we feel - the radiance of a well-cut diamond, the intense sparkle of a fine ruby or the deep blue of a sapphire brings light into a gloomy mood. We felt similarly when contemplating the magnificent emerald in this ring made of fine platinum. The gemstone's clarity and intense colour are reminiscent of green Jell-O, which is further enhanced by the eight teardrop-shaped, diamond-set elements set like icing on the cake all around. Eight round cut emeralds of similarly good quality form the lower end of the beveled ring head, whose goldsmith work is completely subordinate to the fine gemstones. The central gemstone is shaped in the classic emerald cut. This angular cut is used especially for rough crystals in cube or column form, i.e. when nature has already given them an angular shape. Emeralds grow in large cylindrical crystals, so this cut can be used to extract the maximum beauty from the rough crystal without having to accept too much loss while cut or polished. The first-class, transparent emerald with a weight of about 1.90 ct shows fine crystal inclusions and delicate growth features, which identify the stone as a natural emerald and which are called "jardin" (French for "garden"). A bifurcated ring band holds the ring head securely without weighing it down. The ring is a unique hand-forged piece from the 1960s and came to us from Hanover. It comes with a detailed certificate from Idar-Oberstein describing and confirming the qualities of all materials.
