Victorian Medallion Pendant with Belt, circa 1870
The motif of the belt, which shines towards us in forget-me-not blue enamel on the front of the present medallion, has been used by goldsmiths in jewellery design for centuries. It was particularly popular in the symbol-loving 19th century, when the belt was worn as an expression of friendship and a pledge of love. There, jewellery in belt form symbolised the indissoluble unity and bond between two people. In this sense, the belt is also to be understood in our medallion from the years around 1870. Two glazed frames inside the medallion allow the storage of two pictures or locks of hair. Indissolubly, as the belt symbolizes, the memory of a certain person is to be kept upright, to whom one feels connected in special love. The oval pendant is made in the "Back & Front" technique. Here, the two lids of the piece of jewellery are made of 9-carat, slightly reddish gold. They are held and stabilized by a frame made of a base metal. The locket, which found its way to us in the British capital of London, is beautifully preserved and can once again hold your very personal mementos.
In many ancient myths, a belt protects its wearer and endows him with magical abilities. The Germanic thunder god Thor, for example, possessed a belt of strength that doubled his power, and the dwarf king Laurin also gained the strength of 12 men through a belt. According to Homer, all the delights and lures of love were woven into the belt of Aphrodite (Illiad 16, 215), and so more importance was attached to this particular garment than to others.
