Antique pendant with green beryl & diamonds, around 1890
Did you know that the aquamarine and the emerald are siblings - mineralogically speaking? Both gemstones belong to the mineral group beryl, but the aquamarine is water blue, very clear and brilliant, while the emerald shows an intense green with large inclusions, often poetically called "jardin" (French for garden). The green beryl, which differs from the emerald in chemical composition and thus its lighter coloring, is also a son of this family. Its color is a fresh, bright, and slightly yellowish spring green, which it combines, however, with the brilliance and clarity of aquamarine. In fact, beautiful beryls are so clear that we owe them the word "spectacles." In earlier times, they were cut into seeing glasses because they were clearer than glass. Skilful faceting is able to accentuate this clarity and brilliance of the gemstone: such is the case with the present green beryl in a cushion-shaped facet cut of the late 19th century. It is surrounded by a wreath of diamond roses set in silver, while the reverse is reddish gold to prevent staining of skin or clothing. In earlier times, a matching eyelet of silver with a diamond rose was added to the antique pendant. According to the stamp and the design language, this was probably done during the Art Deco period; thus we know that the pendant has already been worn and loved by at least two generations. It is now waiting with us to continue its history. It comes with an independent appraisal confirming the quality of the materials.
