Jungle of the big city

Elegant Art Deco brooch with emerald & diamonds, circa 1928

The frosty sparkle of the brooch here takes us back to the late 1920s. These years between the wars, the Art Deco years, were a wild time. The people of Europe and the USA were confronted with numerous drastic innovations: Electric light fully took hold, film created its stars and starlets who were admired across national borders. The automobile took possession of the city and architecture grew sky-high all at once. It was the age of the cities, the metropolises and the urban jungle. While on a social and political level the tensions grew stronger and stronger and pushed up from the depths, the surface in films, magazines and on the boulevards of the capitals - still - shone in a glittering, seductive way: When at night the movie palaces, the department stores and restaurants were brightly lit, the headlights of the cars brought speed and movement into the cities - then one could imagine oneself in a new, better and modern world. The brooch, which is here, glows in the materials typical of the Art Deco period of cool white gold, sparkling white diamonds, and a few intensely luminous colored stones as accents. Here, quality emeralds add a counterpoint to the white brilliance of the diamonds, evoking the lush splendor of the tropics. The brooch appears as a transverse pin, a classic jewel form of the era. Its center panel, divided by saw marks, presents the two largest gemstones in the design: An emerald of around 0.45 ct and an old European cut diamond of 0.90 ct. The brooch made of high-carat white gold impresses with its quality workmanship, perfect preservation and precious materials. An independent appraisal has confirmed its quality and comes with the brooch.

The 1920s brought a new style to the world of jewellery with Art Deco: geometric abstractions, noble materials and the most luxurious fittings were sought after and supplied by goldsmiths in Paris, London and Vienna as well as by their colleagues in Berlin and overseas. A special type of jewellery enjoyed particular popularity: so-called white jewels combined white diamonds, platinum or white gold to create a crystalline, cool and particularly elegant impression; supernaturally seductive, a little worldly and thus particularly luxurious.
