Between the times
Elegant antique diamond ring with sapphires in platinum, around 1920
This ring transports you to a magical winter garden. Cool and elegant, artfully forged platinum shines. Delicate leaves set with diamonds sprout from the sides of the ring along with sparkling vines. Blue sapphires accent the center of the design, glowing like the sky in winter and drawing the eye to the center of the ring. Here, a large brilliant-cut diamond of around 0.45 ct sparkles, bright white and clear. The ring of the early 20th century stands formally between the rich floral designs of the Belle Époque and the more austere, geometric forms of Art Deco. It combines modern symmetry with a classical closeness to nature and can thus be dated to the years around 1920. This is also supported by the fact that it is forged entirely from platinum, which only slowly became established at the beginning of the 20th century. And last but not least, the two sapphires are stones produced in the laboratory using the then novel process of the Verneuillesynthesis. To no longer be dependent on the whims of nature seemed to contemporaries to be a great advance, and so these stones were used, as here, in large numbers and with pleasure as calibrated setting stones. Calibrated coloured stones, i.e. cut to fit into predetermined shapes, were a speciality of the early 20th century. In combination of coloured stones with diamonds, one loved the effective contrasting effects of light and dark, which further emphasised the geometric designs. Today, these cuts are rare, because they require great craftsman precision and time expenditure from the gemstone cutter. More recently, the setting of the center stone and the stone itself were renewed. In the process, a high quality, very pure and white diamond in a modern full cut was used, whose first class fire has given the ring a new life. Thus the ring is ready to mark the beginning of a new phase of life. As an engagement ring, for example.
