I'm your Venus!

First class vintage gold necklace with five carat diamond and rubies circa 1985

"Goddess on the mountain top / Burning like a silver flame The summit of beauty and love. /And Venus was her name She's got it / Yeah, baby, she's got it I'm your Venus, I'm your fire / And your desire." (Bananarama, 1986) Jewellery of the 1980s is still fascinating today as an often beautiful and always impressive testimony to a time of optimism and abundance: the oil crisis seemed to have been overcome, Wall Street was flourishing, and a new image of the woman was emerging: self-confident and tough, asserting herself at work, in the face of men, successful, with broad shoulder pads and high heels, she adorned herself with rings, necklaces and brooches in hitherto unusual dimensions, with reflective surfaces of yellow gold and rich settings of precious stones. Much costume jewellery was created, but real jewellery was also produced in large numbers in the USA and Europe. The present necklace bears witness to this: the showpiece of the solid gold necklace is a brilliant-cut diamond weighing more than five carats and of exceptionally good clarity (vvsi2). With a diameter of 11.5 mm, the brilliant appears much larger and delights with its beautiful light refraction. Twenty-eight natural rubies ring the round diamond set in white gold. Six trapezoid-cut diamonds weighing a total of 1.60 carats lead as fans to the flat curb chain that holds the magnificent centerpiece. This unusual necklace found its way to us from Zurich, and according to the previous owners, it came from the estate of the Esterhazy princes. It comes with a detailed appraisal by the German Society for Gemstone Appraisal Idar-Oberstein.
