A question of luck
Large Victorian Horseshoe Brooch of Sapphires and Diamonds, circa 1890
On the question of whether to wear the opening of a piece of jewelry in the shape of a horseshoe upwards or downwards, there are different views - depending on which property one assigns to luck. If one believes that it is fleeting, one wears the horseshoe with the opening downwards, so that the luck cannot fly away. However, if one believes that luck can be lost, one wears the horseshoe with the opening facing upwards - so that the luck remains safely inside. However you go about it, the Victorian horseshoe we have here lends itself particularly well as a keeper of good luck, because lucky finds are already the gems with which it is studded. We see 15 natural blue sapphires of pretty, uniform color in settings of gold. A renowned gemological institute has measured the gems to weigh about 7.00 ct. In Gothic-like arches, a setting of 25 fine old-cut diamonds with a combined weight of 3.21 ct joins the outside of this sparkling blue horseshoe. All of the diamonds used here are of a selectly beautiful color, sparkle white and complement the color tone of the sapphires wonderfully. We discovered this precious piece of jewellery in the elegant district of Notting Hill in London and couldn't resist. May it bring happiness to its future owners - no matter how it is worn!
