Pretty Ring With Peach Pink Tourmaline & Diamonds in Gold, From Our Workshop
Some time ago we had a surprising visit. The two grandsons of a gemstone dealer from Stockholm had moved to Berlin and brought a small treasure with them. In their grandfather's estate, they had found a small box that had lain unnoticed in the attic for decades. It was filled with sparkling coloured gemstones in very different colours, tourmalines and beryls, already polished. Gustav Caesar had acquired the gemstones in May 1956, as the handwritten list in the box reveals. Around 170 carats of wonderful gemstones in all the colours of the rainbow had thus been waiting for around 65 years to finally be allowed to shine in the light of the sun! We did not hesitate for long and immediately took over the collection. But how should we present the gemstones? Our goldsmiths designed a ring entirely focused on the presentation of the gemstones. A narrow ring band made of high-carat yellow gold restrainedly wraps around the finger. In its center, the oval faceted gemstone is held securely by four times two prongs. It is accompanied by three white diamonds on the right and left as sparkling points of light. The high karat gold is historic material that we recycled ourselves for sustainability reasons, and the diamonds are also historic stones that already bring a history of their own: They come from pieces of jewellery that have become unfashionable and have been melted down. Set in the ring here is a natural tourmaline from the Swedish collection. Depending on the incidence of light, the stone shows a mixture of the colours pink and peach, a colour that is called "padparadscha" in sapphires, after the Sinhalese name for lotus flower. Tourmalines occur in different colours, whereby the red varieties are also called rubellites. These rare gemstones have been known in Europe only since the beginning of the 18th century, when Dutch merchants brought them from East Asia for the first time. We like this ring because it is unfussy and lets the beautiful gemstone from former Swedish ownership completely take the lead. In addition, it is wonderful to combine.
