Peaceful New Beginning

Magnificent Pendant With Layered Agate Cameo of Eirene, Dated 1950

We associate cameo ornaments primarily with the 19th century and the style epochs of classicism and historicism. However, the carved representations enjoyed great popularity even beyond that. This impressive pendant is a good example of the continued popularity of cameos in the 20th century. In an elaborate setting of yellow gold, we see a finely carved cameo on two-tone layered stone. The profile shows a young woman with a classically beautiful face and antique garb. No attribute tells us who the sitter is, but the back of the setting gives us a clue: we see the year 1950 at the bottom edge, so this is a piece of jewellery from the very first period of the newly founded Federal Republic. After the horrors of war, people longed for peace, reconstruction and a new beginning. What ancient figure could better illustrate this desire than Eirene, the Greek goddess of peace? With this in mind, we are struck by a close resemblance between the goddess on the cameo and a statue of the ancient goddess, which is a Roman copy based on an original by the Greek sculptor Kephisodotos and kept in the -> Glyptothek of Munich. We reproduce it enclosed. The cameo is cut in rich detail and exudes great serenity. Revered as the mother of burgeoning wealth, the goddess was certainly an appropriate choice for a piece of jewellery of the 1950's. Not coincidentally, the name Irene was also one of the most popular first names of the early post-war period. Stylistically, the openwork setting of the cameo with its fine leaf ornaments is still entirely indebted to the pre-war period. A gold pea chain makes the piece of jewellery immediately wearable around the neck.
