The perfect gift

Timeless brooch with diamonds & calibrated rubies, around 1910

Today we usually think of a brooch as a jewel that is worn beneath the shoulder for the sole purpose of decoration. But this was not always the case: especially in the years around 1900, so-called "pins", also known in German as "Ansteck-, Stab- oder Sicherheitsnadeln", proved to be as pretty as they were useful. Such elongated brooches were offered in countless variations in jewellery catalogues. In 1904, for example, the Deutsche Goldschmiedezeitung, in an article called Der Schmuck als Geschenk (Jewellery Gifts), extolled the usefulness of such pins: "The safety pin, as the smallest, most delicate piece [...] is to be used in all forms for a lady's wardrobe. Who even suspects the limit of usability of such needle? For cravats and ties, for jabots and collars they are necessary, in larger form for belts, skirt and jacket fastenings, for gathering up the wide sleeves [...]." The present brooch is such a delicate piece of jewellery, which even today can hold together a silk scarf, adorn a collar or hat, or quite classically the lapel. It is set with an old-cut diamond of a quarter carat, which is highlighted by a frame of calibrated rubies. Presumably these are synthetic rubies, a fashionable novelty around 1910. These are in turn surrounded by a frame of diamond roses. In keeping with contemporary taste, the diamonds are set in platinum, but the rubies are held in yellow gold. This fine piece of jewellery is in excellent condition. We were able to discover it in Vienna. Its hallmark shows that it was imported to Linz before 1922.
