Exquisite bar brooch with old cut diamonds in gold & platinum, circa 1910
Hardly part of the repertoire of modern goldsmiths and jewelers today, the bar brooch was once one of the most popular pieces of jewelry of the Belle Époque and could be found in every lady's jewelry wardrobe. From specimens for daytime, in gold and set with pearls or colorful gemstones, to quality diamond pins for the evening - the bar brooch took many forms. The one we have here is particularly precious. Five large old european cut diamonds of a total of about 2.06 ct - the largest of which alone weighs over half a carat - form the focal points of the brooch and are arranged horizontally in staggered order of size. They are accompanied by leaf elements that make the large diamonds look like flower heads. Small diamond roses occupy the ends of the brooch. Set all over with diamonds, it appears as if bathed in white light. A handmade safety brooch allows carefree wearing of this precious piece of jewelry. The brooch stylistically corresponds to the fashion of the years around 1910 and is also worked according to its materiality, because it is made of gold covered with platinum. Interestingly, the small diamonds that set the leaves seem to be much older than the brooch itself: They are shaped in that almost rectangular brilliant cut that was prevalent in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Presumably, they were taken from an old heirloom, a common procedure at the time. The cut of the large diamonds, however, corresponds to the time of origin of the brooch itself. The piece of jewelry is very well preserved and a wonderful floral greeting from the Belle Époque.
