Victorian bracelet with pearls & turquoise paste in gold, around 1850

Queen Victoria reigned for 63 years, and numerous styles of jewelry came and went during her reign. The first decades after her accession, the 1830s to 1850s, are also summarized as the "Romantic Period" - corresponding to the theme of the jewelry, which was often sentimental in nature. The present bracelet is a fine example of this. Centrally, it sets a glass cut into a cabochon in the colour of turquoise. This had a special meaning in the jewellery of that time: It symbolised true love as well as the sentiment "forget-me-not", due to its colour proximity to the flower of the same name. Through Henry IV, the loan translation "Forget-me-not" was also introduced into England, where it was therefore already known in Victorian times and has remained until today. This meaning is taken up in a hidden way, as below the centrepiece a glazed compartment is set with the braided hair of a loved one - probably that of the original gift-giver. Two large paws hold the centrepiece, which is also decorated with four pearls. The paws and the centerpiece are made of gold, as is the bracelet itself. Fine vine engravings decorate all surfaces of the view side, much in keeping with the fashion of the time around 1850. We discovered this beautiful bracelet in London. Its design language and execution also originated in Great Britain.
