This ring glows in an unusual shade of green: delicately designed and finely crafted, it holds, in filigree prongs of high-carat gold, an emerald from Zambia. Typical of gemstones from this origin, the stone displays a subtly cool, almost aquatic green hue – perfectly complemented by the surround of large old-cut diamonds set in platinum. The emerald is also remarkably clear: only a few fine growth bands and small inclusions along its crystal structure create delicate light reflections within. With its slender, elegant shank, openwork undergallery in gold, and blossom-like platinum setting, the ring is a typical example of early 20th-century craftsmanship. Based on the distinctive diamond cuts and stylistic features, we date the piece to the 1910s, most likely made in Germany. Small import marks on the outside of the shank show that it was brought into France at a later date. The emerald itself was set into the historic ring at a later time. Zambian emeralds have only been regularly available on the market since the late 1970s, and the jeweller Tiffany made Zambian emeralds highly fashionable in the 1990s. Which stone originally adorned the ring can unfortunately no longer be determined. The present emerald, however, with its colour, clarity, and harmonious cut, is a perfect match for the fine and precious execution of the ring, which features a total of approximately 1.30 ct of diamonds in historic cuts. The ring came to us from Paris – a detailed expert’s report is included.
