Description
The Demi-parure is a typical invention of the 19th century. It usually consists of a brooch - sometimes with a double function as a pendant-brooch - and a pair of matching earrings. With such a demi-parure, the bourgeois lady was representatively adorned for any activity. From their representative and dressy function it can be seen that these pieces of jewellery were always adapted to the prevailing fashion, so that they can be dated stylistically well. The present set, with its suspended fringes and black enamel accents on gold, corresponds almost perfectly to the fashion of the years around 1870. The hallmarks also confirm this dating: the antique set bears gold hallmarks used in Austria-Hungary between 1867 and 1872. The large central piece of jewellery is designed in the shape of a flower. Fine diamond roses in buttercup settings are presented in three staggered levels in addition. Black enamel accentuates the outline of the outer petals. Three tapered pendulums swing below. The piece can be worn as a brooch and as a pendant. To do so, the brooch's C-hook folds inward and the pin can be removed thanks to a small pin. The earrings are designed as a smaller, reduced version of the same motif. They are also made of gold, black enamel and diamonds. A movable pendulum also closes a flower motif downward. In total, there are about 3.00 ct of diamonds set in high karat. The beautiful set has been preserved in its matching case, lined with lime green velvet and silk of the same color. Then as now, it is a companion for many occasions.
