In the first decades of the 19th century, no well-dressed lady was seen without elaborate necklaces, which accentuated the décolleté and shoulders exposed by the Empire dresses of the time. Usually worn close to the neck, sometimes in multiple rows, sometimes in a single row, all these necklaces had one thing in common: their colorful splendor. The present necklace corresponds to the so-called rivière type, which was particularly popular in the period around 1820. The term is derived from the French word for river and describes the flowing impression of the densely packed, gleaming gemstones, which almost seem to float on the skin in their restrained settings. Natural garnets were used here, which are characterized by their luminous hue reminiscent of rose petals. A foil backing gives their color a particularly deep effect and creates luminous reflections depending on the incidence of light. Delicate, pinched settings made from high-carat gold hold the individual stones, which are arranged close together. The necklace is a beautiful, exceptionally well-preserved example of early 19th century jewellery that came to us from Franconian aristocratic property. We have reproduced a fashion print from the Costume Parisien of 1819, which gives an impression of the fashion worn with a similar necklace (Rijksmuseum RP-P-2009-2455).
