The 1920s and early 1930s, the wild, fast-past years between the two great wars, are seen by many people today as a time of longing. Politically turbulent, marked by crises and major upheavals, but also progressive, in love with luxury and fun-loving: we think of the early heyday of black-and-white films, nightclubs and cabarets, modern paintings by artists such as Otto Dix. The jewellery created during this period was intended to reflect this attitude to life. It was modern and luxurious, relying on geometries, contrasts and clear, crystalline designs. The delicate, elegant white gold pendant we are presenting here is a typical piece of jewellery from these years. Its design is composed of basic geometric shapes: Triangles, rectangles and hexagons are placed next to and on top of each other so that the shape staggers and enlarges from top to bottom. The centerpiece is a rectangular princess-cut diamond. Delicate milgrains and numerous smaller diamonds further enliven the design all around. The pendant has reached us from Austria; its hallmarks reveal that it was created in Vienna. We had the 1.35 ct diamond in the center set in the pendant. It has a slightly warm tinted color and shows some natural inclusions inside. To make these less visible, the diamond was filled with a highly refractive substance. This type of treatment was developed in the late 1980s, following the example of the treatment of emeralds and other gemstones that has been in use for a long time. We have added a matching platinum chain to the pendant.
