Fahrner jewellery from Pforzheim occupies a special place in the history of jewellery from Germany. For Theodor Fahrner and later his successor Gustav Braendle knew how to make artistically convincing designs and high-quality workmanship the hallmark of their brooches, necklaces, bracelets and earrings in the epochs of Art Nouveau and Art Deco like hardly any other modern jewellery manufacturer. But even during the period of reconstruction after 1945, Fahrner jewellery remained a household name. At first, the designs were mainly formal continuations of the old successes. But soon Pforzheim was also producing in the taste of the new age. In the 1960s, silver, which could be easily worked, was the most popular material. Interesting and unusual structures and daring volumes were in demand. The brooch presented here is a fine example of this. It shows a large flower in the centre, the pistil of which is formed by a fine cultured pearl. Not like in previous decades, marcasites sparkle around this pearl, it is high-light refractive rhinestones that occupy the petals and almost look like diamonds. An expansive arched shape with polished surfaces backdrops this blossom in an exciting way. Since the early years of the company, travelling salesmen with large sample cases had presented the innovations developed in Pforzheim to local jewellers every year. One such sample case had lain untouched in an attic for the last 40 years or more until it was offered to us. It contained samples of almost all series from about 1919 until the dissolution of the company in 1979, mostly marked with a model number or the "Original Fahrner" seal. This piece of jewellery from the 1960s comes from this sample case and is therefore unworn and perfectly preserved. Fahrner jewellery is readily collected. Schmuck zwischen Avantgarde und Tradition", edited by Brigitte Leonhardt and Dieter Zühlsdorff, Stuttgart 2005.
