This pair of earrings features two oval plaques with fine painting in grisaille enamel. They depict two ancient deities of war standing triumphantly over cannons in magnificent armor. They are the Roman gods Mars and Bellona. In ancient mythology, they were regarded as a couple who embodied two different sides of war: Mars stands for orderly, strategic and state-supporting war, while Bellona represents the wild, impetuous and destructive power of battle. In Baroque art, the two were often depicted together because their contrast provided an ideal field of tension for dramatic compositions. Numerous artists took up the theme to express power, domination and military virtue allegorically. Mars and Bellona thus appear not only as mythological figures, but also as symbols of political strength and human passion, which merged impressively in Baroque imagery. Our plaques are presumably based on a Baroque engraving. We have included a depiction of the two from the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, which is attributed to the Flemish painter Bartholomeus Spranger, see also here. The plaques were created in the 1870s, when jewellery with enamel painting in rococo and baroque forms became very fashionable. The two plaques were once part of a bracelet, which unfortunately only came to us in fragments. In our workshop, we have had high-carat gold hoops fitted so that they can now be worn as earrings.
