Every now and then, on our wanderings through antique shops, auction houses, and flea markets, we come across fragments of antique pieces of jewellery and small relics from times gone by—items that, on their own, no longer seem wearable, yet we simply cannot walk past them. We pass these finds on to our goldsmith. He is always delighted by these special discoveries, as they give him the opportunity to let his imagination run wild and breathe new life into the old materials, transforming them into wearable jewellery. In the case of this particular piece, we found historic diamonds in their original settings and used them as the starting point for a new creation. The white gemstones, with a combined total weight of approximately 0.15 ct, were cut toward the end of the 19th century. Hanging freely from them are clusters of vividly green chrysoprase. Chrysoprase is the apple-green variety of chalcedony. Its intense colour and silky luster are particularly striking when the stone is smoothly polished—as it is here—rather than faceted. It owes its name to Greek: χρυσός (chrysos) means “gold,” and πράσον (prason) means “leek.” Fitted with gold hooks, the antique diamonds can now be worn as earrings together with the chrysoprases.
