The new style, which conquered the world from France in the c. 1900s, wanted to wrap the whole of life in beauty. The artists of this new art, Art Nouveau or Jugendstil, as it was called in Germany, saw themselves as avant-garde and devoted themselves to even the smallest detail of everyday life. It was not only architecture that was to be redesigned and finally find a contemporary answer to the changes in modern life. The forms of drawing, painting, decoration, clothing, furniture, everyday objects and - of course - jewellery were also rethought and redesigned. A beautiful testimony to this new fashion is this brooch, which was created in the early years of the still young 20th century. It is made of gold and covered with a layer of light platinum. An old-cut diamond of around 0.40 ct and nine rose-cut diamonds add sparkling white highlights. The brooch has a slightly elongated, curved shape, from the center of which the old-cut diamond hangs like a shimmering fruit. The brooch itself is dynamic and is reminiscent of flying whips, a motif that led contemporaries to refer to the style as the "coup-de-fouet" style, i.e. the style with a whip-crack. The brooch is delicate and yet very well preserved. We discovered it here in Berlin. It was most likely made in Germany, as suggested by the hallmarking and the fineness of the gold.
