This vintage brooch from around 2000 is based on antique models and takes us back to the beginning of the 20th century with its elegant, clear design language. Numerous narrow pieces of jewellery, reduced in their design, were created at this time, which were set with ever new combinations of a strong coloured gemstone with diamonds. The coloured stones were always cut into the settings in a calibrated manner, as is the case here, so that the impression of a continuous band is created. Some of this antique jewellery with calibrated coloured stones set in a very comparable way can be found in David Bennet and Daniela Mascetti: Understanding Jewellery, Woodbridge 2010, on page 283. In our case, the brooch of high karat white gold is shown in an elongated stretched almond shape. It is alternately set with bands of white diamonds and calibrated red rubies. Only the cuts of the diamonds and the stamping reveal that the brooch was created only in recent years. This piece of jewellery, which came to us from Mecklenburg, is excellently preserved and a contemporary homage to the jewellery of the Belle Époque!

The ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. Corundum can be found in almost all colours of the rainbow, even completely colourless stones are among them. But while all these stones can also be addressed as sapphires, only the magnificently red stones of this mineral genus are rubies. Among the coloured stones, the ruby is by far the most valuable stone; only particularly high-quality pink, blue or green diamonds fetch higher prices today. Throughout history, the best rubies have always been mined in Burma, around the city of Mogok. They are characterized by an intense pink-red colour, also known as "pigeon's blood". The best stones seem to glow as if from an inner fire, which is best visible in daylight: stones that still appear fantastically red in artificial light can appear washed out under the sun. According to tradition, rubies are divine, princely stones. Since the colour is reminiscent of blood and burning fire, their connection to burning love was quite natural. Supposedly, they even prevent disease and give proud, fresh courage. Indian princes therefore even had themselves addressed as "King of Rubies".
