Tourmaline is very rare in antique jewellery until the end of the 19th century. It became really popular only in the first decade of the 20th century. As late as 1888, the Journal of Goldsmiths' Art reported: "They have hitherto been completely neglected because their beauty was unknown, and only recently has the value of moonstones, hyacinths, zircons, tourmalines begun to be properly appreciated, and their popularity is now increasing every year." In 1907, the same journal even reported about productive new tourmaline mines in Burma. This gem bears witness to the beauty and also growing popularity of this gemstone at that time. The large, intense dark green tourmaline of about 4.87 ct is held in place by the finest gold prongs that effectively, but almost invisibly, set it. Surrounding filigree of platinum on gold enhances the colour of the green gem. Diamond roses glitter in the flower-like weave, which was big in fashion around 1910 in this round, openwork shape. We discovered the gem in England, but it could have been made in Germany. It is very well preserved. Quote from Loraine Pearce Bucklin: "Aesthetic Jewels", Journal der Goldschmiedekunst, 8 (1888), pp. 21-22 (here p. 22).
