In the late 1970s and early 1980s, a wave of nostalgia swept through the world of jewellery. Where cool white gold in the style of international modernism had just been fashionable, pieces of jewelry based on models from the Victorian era were now being worn. Ornamental details, figurative cameos, lockets - the whole world of the late 19th century was back. Some of the jewelry was made in Great Britain by the same companies that had produced it in the 19th century, particularly in Birmingham, the Pforzheim of Great Britain. However, it was a final flourish: shortly afterwards, most of these companies had to close their doors for good. The surviving pieces of jewellery from this period are therefore special: they are made using the old craftsmanship techniques, with the same skill and know-how that has long since been lost and replaced by mostly much simpler processes and rough castings. This pendant is an example of this, it was created in Birmingham in 1979 - and yet it could have been made 100 years earlier. It sets a cameo in gold. We see a young lady with artfully pinned-up hair that falls down in long corkscrew curls. Gem jewellery was exceptionally popular in the 19th century. In the 20th century, the cut and subject matter of the cameos used changed. Whereas mythological themes had previously been in demand and the ladies depicted were goddesses, young girls were depicted in the 1950s. The teardrop-shaped pendant exemplifies this change, making it modern and combining the past with the present. According to its hallmarks, it was made in 1979 in the workshop of Charles Green & Son, Ltd, Tenby Street, Birmingham, which can be traced back to at least 1900 (initially without the son). An interesting piece, perfectly preserved.
