The art of Far Eastern cultures has long been a source of inspiration for European artists. So different was the foreign perspective, so fresh were the shapes and colors to the Western eye. As early as the end of the 16th century, Delft ceramists were producing blue and white objects based on Chinese models. In the late 19th century, Art Nouveau artists ventured a comprehensive renewal of Western art - not least with the help of the flowing lines they had discovered in Japanese woodblock prints. From the 1920s onwards, Chinese influences once again found their way into Central European jewelry designs. This time, the focus of interest was on Chinese carvings in vermilion and black lacquer as well as green jade. The aesthetics of these lacquer works were taken up in Chinese-inspired Art Deco jewellery with the help of coral, onyx or enamel, while retaining jade as the material. In combination with gold, platinum and diamonds, pieces of jewelry were created that had never before been seen in Europe. We had such jewels in mind when we redesigned these earrings made of jade and small earring tops from around 1900. A small old-cut diamond, set in platinum and supported by a gold leverback, sparkles above each of the softly carved, lime green jade stones - which we were able to acquire ourselves at the foot of the Great Wall of China. A small lion and an ox, two lucky animals of the Chinese zodiac, are depicted in a wonderful three-dimensional carving. We have placed the earrings in an antique earring case to protect the elegantly and expertly cut jade plaques. It is, of course, included with the earrings.
