In July 1831, a submarine volcano erupted in front of the town of Sciacca, located on the southern coast of Sicily. The repeated submarine volcanic eruptions and numerous earthquakes had killed large quantities of corals, which formed one of the richest deposits in the entire Mediterranean. These subfossil corals had taken on a salmon hue due to long storage in the water, which made them unmistakable. This treasure of the sea was discovered in 1875. Soon the mining of the corals began, but just as quickly, already in 1915, the deposits were completely exhausted. In the present long necklace we see particularly beautiful corals arranged in a row. These are beads from around 1900 with the characteristic salmon tone that makes the "Corallo Sciacca" so desirable. The strand is arranged in graduated, which means that the pearls become thicker towards the center. The necklace, of which we have had a total of 205 corals newly strung and knozem, is held by a beautiful clasp made of gold, in which a faceted coral is embedded. A magnificent piece of jewelry from the Italy of the turn of the century, which found its way to us here in Berlin. Illustration: Outbreak of Ferdinandea Island by Camillo de Vito (1831), private collection.
