Black and white, shine and shadow, day and night: These contrasts have accompanied us through every era of jewelry history. This colour scheme was particularly popular during the Art Deco period, but even the classicism of the Empire style had a soft spot for the brilliance of these “non-colours.” Now, this classic of jewelry history has inspired a whole new pair of earrings. From time to time, on our forays through antique shops, auction houses, and flea markets, we come across fragments or parts of antique pieces of jewellery that, as they are, don’t seem wearable—yet we simply can’t walk past them. We pass these objects on to our goldsmith. He’s always delighted by these little finds, as they allow him to give free rein to his imagination and breathe new life into them. In the case of these earrings, we’ve used historic diamonds in their original platinum settings to create a new piece. The precious gemstones, with a total weight of approximately 0.18 ct, were cut c. 1900 and have been preserved in their period-style bezel settings made of gold and platinum. Among them are dangling pendants made of glossy black onyx. With renewed yellow gold hooks, the precious gemstones can now be worn as earrings. The result is a wonderful pair of earrings that combines not only black and white, but also old and new.
