In 1830, significant emerald deposits were discovered in the Ural Mountains near Ekaterinburg, on the Tokovaya River near Malashevo. Legend has it that a farmer noticed unusual green crystals between the roots of a fallen tree. These were the first emerald finds in the Russian Tsarist Empire - and emeralds of exceptional quality. At the invitation of Nicholas I, Alexander von Humboldt undertook a scientific journey through Russia and Central Asia in those years. His fame as one of the most important natural scientists in Europe was so great that the Russian Tsar presented him with various mineralogical treasures from the Russian mines, including a large emerald specimen from the Urals. Humboldt was therefore particularly interested in the newly discovered emeralds, as they confirmed that precious beryls are not only found in South America, but also in other geological formations. The wonderful gemstone is now kept in the Berlin Natural History Museum. Another unusually large emerald from the Ural Mountains is the centerpiece of this necklace from the 1970s. The muggle-cut stone, weighing around 125 carats, has a minty salbeit tone and is engraved all around. We know jewelry engravings on emeralds primarily from Indian gemstones of the Mughal period. Gemstones rich in inclusions were often used for this purpose, the surface of which was refined by hand engraving. Our Russian emerald also shows a rich inclusion pattern with natural color zoning. The goldsmith's work that holds the emerald was created in the workshop of Bent Gabrielsen Pedersen. Pedersen was born in Copenhagen in 1928 and also studied there. From 1969 to 1988, he ran his own studio in the Danish town of Kolding. The emerald is minimalistically held only by a surrounding white gold ring, a T-shaped agraffe leads to a hand-forged chain, which is composed of simple eyelets and twisted metal sheets. This unusual piece of jewellery is in very good condition and combines Danish design with a mineralogically exciting gemstone.
