In 1830, significant emerald deposits were discovered in the Ural Mountains near Ekaterinburg, on the Tokovaya River near Malashevo. Legend has it that a farmer noticed unusual green crystals between the roots of a fallen tree. These were the first emerald finds in the Russian Tsarist Empire - and emeralds of exceptional quality. At the invitation of Nicholas I, Alexander von Humboldt undertook a scientific journey through Russia and Central Asia in those years. His fame as one of the most important natural scientists in Europe was so great that the Russian Tsar presented him with various mineralogical treasures from the Russian mines, including a large emerald specimen from the Urals.
