This stunning vintage brooch comes from the famous Danish company Georg Jensen. For Jensen some of the best goldsmiths of the Scandinavian country worked and still work and produce each own designs. The piece with the design number 217B was designed by Harald Nielsen (1892 - 1977). Nielsen originally intended to become a painter, but after his sister became Georg Jensen's wife, he too joined his brother-in-law's firm. He started as an engraving apprentice in 1909 and became the company's artistic director in 1958, a position he held until 1962. During his long tenure at Georg Jensen, Harald Nielsen designed numerous pieces of jewellery, cutlery and bodyware. Many of his designs are still in the tradition of the Danish Art Nouveau style known as Skønvirke. But also influences of the Art Déco can be recognized. The present vintage brooch from the 2nd half of the 20th century after an older design shows this fusion. In Nielsen's typical formal language, we see a grape made of shiny silver balls suspended movably under an upper part made of leaves. The design oscillates between naturalism and abstraction and already reveals the well-known design line of Moonlight Grapes, which has become a classic of the house of Georg Jensen. The piece of jewellery came to us from a private collection in Baden. It is beautifully preserved and a particularly appealing piece of Danish jewellery design!
