In the last third of the 19th century, British artists increasingly began to question the traditional values of arts and crafts. One aim was to move away from the display of precious materials as an end in itself. Not only precious jewels in gold could be beautiful and should determine the value of a piece of jewellery - rather, the aesthetic value of a design should be appreciated above all. This gave rise to silver jewelry that could be purchased by broader sections of society. This attitude of placing beauty above all else was known as aestheticism or the Aesthetic Movement. The form and design should of course be original and not rest on the traditional forms that had been repeated for decades. This necklace is a perfect example of this. The necklace is made up of differently shaped links. Six large silver clasps display an elaborately embossed pattern of flower shapes reminiscent of boldly knitted brocade fabric. Interlocking, wide rings, also with a relief surface, hold the clasps together and complete the necklace. The locket itself is attached to a simple spring ring. It has a smooth back and the front looks like a view into a flower-covered pavilion. Overlays of red gold and yellow gold together with fine engravings form an arrangement of funnel vines and forget-me-nots, which in the language of flowers have the meaning of loving remembrance. The set has been excellently preserved in its antique, possibly original case. We were able to discover it in London, where it was probably made by the jewelers Howell, James & Co. in Regent Street.
