This unusually high-quality coat of arms ring came to us from Vienna. It is made of solid cast gold and holds an engraved stone with an aristocratic coat of arms. Where opaque gemstones such as agates or lapis lazuli are usually used, this ring surprises with a much higher quality version. The coat of arms is cut into a natural, untreated sapphire from Ceylon. The gemstone is transparent and intensely uniform blue, weighing around 8.50 carats. Beneath an aristocratic crown with five prongs, we see a shield engraved with three intertwined rings, two above one. A reclining lion as an accompanying figure can be seen under the escutcheon. The heraldic figure is the so-called "Borromean rings". They take their name from the Italian Borromeo family, who used the rings in their family coat of arms. The intertwined rings symbolize strength through unity. Last but not least, at the end of the 19th century, the three rings were also used as the logo of the Krupp company, where they also represented railroad tires. The ring was made on behalf of a solvent customer; there is no other explanation for the high-quality finish. The hallmarks on the inside of the ring band reveal that it was made in Vienna. However, the family to which the ring originally belonged is still shrouded in mystery.
